BOX OFFICE BOMBS
Box Office in Brief:
Box office help provide weekly collections of the films that get released in box office. Films that generate huge revenues within a short period and which cover production costs are declared to be hits, while those films which witness falling public and which don’t generate enough revenues are said to be box office bombs. In short, the revenues generated at the box office help determine the fate of the film. Mostly, in the 80’s, the performance of the film hugely depended upon how it used to fare in the box office in its initial stages. Films which did not evoke proper response in the beginning were quickly removed from the market and were declared to be box office bombs. The collections of the films generated in USA and Canada are said to be domestic collections .On most rare cases, films are declared a hit based on their domestic collections. In normal circumstances, it so happens that theatres retain at least 45% of the total revenues and the remaining is retained by the studio, as a form of rental charges.
Miscellaneous:
Today, it is a fact that box office results do not necessarily indicate the profit statistics of a particular film. Sometimes, it so happens that films which fare poorly at the box office, do recover their costs through television distribution, international market rights and so on and so forth. The main irony in such cases is that, even though box office dub the film to be a bomb, the film manages to recover its initial costs.
Inference:
There were times, when the payments of stars and their popularity were exclusively based on their performance at the box office. Box office performances are not mostly career ending for the crew and cast of the film. There are instances, when the box office records of certain films were poor but the lead actors of the film have gone on, to become huge stars. A famous British Star, despite appearing in successive flops is still cast in major roles and is extremely popular. It is a fact that box offices today don’t have that much authority as before. |
